Before meeting my husband, I had never experienced the vibrant culture of a pow wow. Now, twenty-two years later, I’ve attended numerous events and captured countless moments through photography. These celebrations highlight Native American traditions, dance, music, and community spirit. Here are some images from various pow wows over the years to honor Native American Heritage Month.
An image can capture the beautiful regalia and powerful movements, but it does not capture the amazing music that come from the drum circles.
Of course attending a ceremony steeped in tradition and culture is made even better when friends and family are involved. My husband participates in the local pow wows regularly and my son has spent some time dancing as well. Don’t they look handsome in their regalia?
Here they are with some friends and family.
My husband and his great uncles, some of the best humans you will ever meet.
The food at Pow Wows can not be missed, espcially the fry bread, which is a must.
In addition to excellent food, there are vendors that surround the event that are a joy to explore.
If you have never attended a Pow Wow but would like to experience one, here are some that my family try to attend.

In fact, there is a native american museum on the way out to Montauk where you can find a photo of his relative, Oscar Bunn, who was the first Native American Golfer to enter a national championship.
If you are interested in reading a little more about Oscar Bunn, here is a link with a brief article.
